Our History

The creation of The Northumberland Church of England Academy (NCEA) was sponsored by the Church of England Diocese of Newcastle and the Duke of Northumberland, and was a joint, £51m funded venture between Northumberland County Council and the government’s Partnerships for Schools.

The project delivered new and refurbished buildings for almost 3,000 children, including those with special educational needs, in Ashington, Newbiggin and Lynemouth.

NCEA was the biggest new single-build school contract in the national academies’ framework and the first all-age academy on multiple sites in the UK.

The Josephine Butler Campus was officially opened on March 1st 2012 and is one of five NCEA sites, of which three were specially constructed. The other new-build sites, all designed and constructed by Kier Construction, are the Grace Darling Campus in Newbiggin, and the William Leech Campus in Lynemouth.
