Expressive Arts Pathway

Designed for students who wish to develop their creative side, this pathway will support students to progress into work or university courses in the arts.

Students opting for this pathway will take single BTEC courses (1 A-level equivalent) in Performing Arts and Music. They will then have a choice of a further two subjects out of BTEC Media; A level Art and Design and/or the Extended Project Qualification.

Running alongside the curriculum offer will be a comprehensive range of enrichment activities which will focus on developing the skills, interest and experience essential for successful future progression. The enrichment programme will feature:

  • visiting artists
  • instrumental tuition
  • rock school qualifications
  • community and military music
  • open-on-line courses
  • work experience placements

This pathway is run by Mr Thompson, our Head of Faculty for Expressive Arts. Mr Thompson is a highly experienced musician and is qualified in both music and theatre. He has been involved in musical theatre for over 30 years and currently plays for Westoe Brass Band. He is also a conductor for Wallsend and Killingworth Community Choirs, is a composer and arranger of vocal music and is a governor of the North Tyneside Music Education Hub. One of Mr Thompson’s career highlights has been working with the BBC on the Hadrian’s Wall of Sound project during which he co-ordinated and conducted the choir at the finale.

Mr Thompson has put together this pathway in order to help develop those students interested in pursuing a career in the arts. He says of the pathway:

“I’m delighted that this Performance pathway has been created, allowing students the opportunity to not have to make a choice between one performance subject or another. This allows for students to take a multi-disciplined course of study, and to complement one with the other. This is a really exciting development and I’m really looking forward to leading and teaching on this pathway”.
